From Kibera to Medical School: Grace's Inspiring Journey

Margy Otiato

How one young woman's determination, combined with KAI mentorship, led her from the slums of Kibera to the University of Nairobi School of Medicine.

Grace Achieng's story is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of believing in someone's potential.

The Beginning

Growing up in Kibera, one of Africa's largest informal settlements, Grace never imagined she could attend university, let alone medical school. "I saw poverty, disease, and hopelessness every day," she recalls. "But I also saw the difference one caring person could make."

The Turning Point

When Grace joined Kingdom Ambassadors International in 2020, she was struggling with self-doubt despite her excellent grades. "I had the academic ability, but I didn't believe I deserved opportunities," she shares.

Through KAI's mentorship program, Grace connected with mentors who helped her:

- Navigate scholarship applications

- Prepare for university entrance exams

- Develop confidence in her abilities

- Understand that her background was not a limitation

Giving Back While Growing

What set Grace apart was her commitment to serving others even while receiving help. She participated in KAI's charity missions, teaching health education in her own community. "KAI taught me that I could give back even before I 'made it,'" she explains.

Today

Grace is now in her third year at the University of Nairobi School of Medicine, studying on a full scholarship. She's also founded a health education initiative in Kibera, training young people to be community health advocates.

"KAI didn't just help me get to medical school," Grace says. "They taught me that my story—my struggles and my community—are my greatest assets, not obstacles to overcome."

Her dream? To return to Kibera as a doctor and establish a community health center that serves with dignity and trains the next generation of health workers from the community itself.

Grace's journey reminds us why we do this work: because when one person rises, they lift an entire community with them.
