Reflections from Mombasa: When Youth Rise to Lead
Powerful moments from our recent team-building retreat at Mombasa Beach, where young leaders discovered their strength in community.
The ocean waves crashed against the shore as 30 young people gathered in a circle on Mombasa Beach. What happened over those three days reminded me why Kingdom Ambassadors International exists.
The Setup
Our team-building retreats aren't just about fun and games (though there's plenty of that!). They're intentionally designed spaces where youth can:
- Step away from daily pressures and discover who they really are
- Build authentic relationships with peers
- Practice leadership in a safe environment
- Experience the power of community
The Breakthrough Moment
On the second day, we did an exercise called "Because Someone Saw Me"—inspired by the story of our founding. Each person shared a time when someone believed in them when they didn't believe in themselves.
The room was silent except for the sound of the ocean and occasional tears. Story after story revealed the same truth: we all need someone to see our potential before we can see it ourselves.
Then something beautiful happened. Without prompting, the youth started affirming each other—calling out the strengths and potential they saw in their peers. "I see leadership in you." "I see creativity." "I see resilience."
The Ripple Effect
What struck me most was watching the quiet ones—the youth who usually stay in the background—step into their voice. By the end of the retreat, they were leading discussions, organizing activities, and encouraging others.
One young man, Brian, told me: "I came here thinking I was broken because of my struggles with depression. But this circle showed me that my pain has given me empathy. That's not weakness—it's my superpower for helping others."
Why Retreats Matter
In our fast-paced, achievement-focused world, young people rarely get space to just BE. To discover who they are apart from grades, expectations, and social media personas.
These retreats create that space. And in that space, transformation happens.
The Return
As we packed up to leave Mombasa, I watched these youth exchange contact information, make plans to stay connected, and commit to supporting each other. They weren't just leaving with good memories—they were leaving as a community.
That's the power of rising together. When one rises, we all rise.
If you're a young person reading this: you belong in this circle. Your story matters. Your potential is real. And we'd love to see you at our next retreat.
If you're a supporter: thank you for making these experiences possible. You're not just funding a program—you're investing in the leaders who will transform Africa.
